Lybrel is the recent most advanced and unique combination birth control pill which is the first extended-cycle oral contraceptive. Lybrel has specially been designed and formulated for providing the effective dose of hormones on daily basis. Lybrel is said to completely cease the menstrual periods in females for the whole year. The pill, as it is categorized, contains extremely low dose of Levonorgestrel – 90 mcg and Ethyl Estradiol – 20mcg and is the continuous non cyclic combination oral contraceptive.

Lybrel has been accepted for use by the United States Food and Drugs Administration-FDA, precisely on the May 22, 2007, as the first ever and perhaps the only contraceptive pill which has also been designed to prevent menstrual periods in women for the full year. The hormones in Lybrel avert both ovulation and shedding of the menstruation when a woman takes COCP-Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills.

Conventional pack of this COCP has 21 active pills and 7 placebo pills. Abandonment of bleeding takes place during the placebo taking week replicating the average of 28 day menstrual rotation. The placebo pills are not needed for protecting pregnancy and with any mono-phase COCP; the placebo pills may be passed over for averting the withdrawal bleeding.
